Gli Imagine Dragons sono una band pop rock che negli ultimi anni ha goduto di un successo strepitoso sia negli Stati Uniti sia all’estero. Il loro stile musicale racchiude la modernità ricercata dagli ascoltatori più giovani, con un Neo Soul mescolato al rock e all’elettronica. Il motivo del loro successo deriva anche dall’abilità del cantante Dan Reynolds nello scrivere e nell’interpretare i testi.

Nello specifico, il brano Believer è particolarmente legato a un’esperienza di vita di Reynolds, ovvero la sua battaglia con la spondilite anchilosante, una forma di artrite molto aggressiva che può provocare forti dolori e cifosi. Oltre alla condizione fisica debilitante, il testo di Believer è stato ispirato anche da altri periodi difficili e i relativi stati d’animo affrontati dal cantante. Believer però è una canzone carica di positività, un invito a prendere tutto il dolore per trasformarlo in positività per andare avanti nonostante tutte le difficoltà della vita. Avendo dovuto affrontare anche la depressione, Reynolds si batte spesso per far capire alla società che questa malattia non è da stigmatizzare, bensì da curare con l’aiuto di un professionista, senza provare alcuna vergogna. La traduzione di Believer d’altronde è ‘credente’, quindi un invito a credere in sé stessi.

Believer degli Imagine Dragons ha raggiunto la vetta delle classifiche negli Stati Uniti, diventando il terzo singolo della band più famoso dopo Radioactive e Demons. Il successo di Believer non è rimasto confinato in patria, infatti come tutti i singoli degli Imagine Dragons, anche questo ha riscosso notevole popolarità in Europa.

A livello compositivo, Believer è una canzone non troppo complessa, scritta su un tempo di 125 bpm e usando il SIb come chiave. La struttura del brano non si discosta dallo stile diretto degli Imagine Dragons e come Radioactive, presenta una produzione roboante, caratterizzata da suoni cristallini e potenti. D’altronde gli Imagine Dragons sono legati ad un certo tipo di rock, chiamato anche Arena Rock, uno stile che prevede la composizione di alcuni brani proprio per l’esecuzione dal vivo di fronte a grandi folle di spettatori. Per la registrazione della voce è stato usato il filtro antipop per il microfono, in modo da eliminare i rumori superflui.

Sebbene gli Imagine Dragons siano una band relativamente giovane, il video di Believer vede come co-protagonista una figura legata agli anni ‘80, ovvero il mitico Dolph Lundgren. Nel videoclip, l’attore svedese si rimette i guantoni come in Rocky IV, magari con qualche ruga in più ma sempre convincente come nel ruolo del tremendo Ivan Drago. Nel video Dolph Lundgren combatte contro lo stesso Reynolds, rappresentando probabilmente le varie difficoltà della vita e la costante lotta che ognuno di noi deve affrontare per poter andare avanti. Le scene di combattimento si intrecciano con quelle di un bambino (probabilmente Reynolds da giovane) che disegna su un foglio. Il disegno si rivelerà essere il simbolo tatuato sul petto del cantante, un tatuaggio che significa ‘evoluzione’.
